An American in Manchuria

Night at the symphony

I went to see the Jilin Symphony Company play last night!  All of the musicians were Korean and the conductor was a native-born Korean who now resides in the States.  They played music from three Western composers, but finished it off with some local music, which the audience loved and began to clap along.  The atmosphere, in general, was different from any symphony concert that I have been to in America.  Here, it was a family event with kids running around and people bringing drinks and snacks into the hall.  Most people wore jeans.  It was the largest gathering of Westerners that I had seen since being here and most of them, if not all, dressed business casual.  A pleasant evening.
